ESL

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Program Goals

The ESL program is designed to help students build strong foundational listening, speaking,
reading, writing, and grammar skills while improving fluency and accuracy for effective
communication in everyday and academic settings. The program prepares students for the
challenges of academic courses at an American university by developing critical thinking,
note-taking, academic writing skills, and expanding their academic vocabulary.
Additionally, students gain a deeper understanding of American culture and social norms,
fostering confidence in navigating cultural differences and participating in campus life.
Focusing on integrating technology into learning, the program enhances digital literacy
through online grammar tools, software, and internet resources. By cultivating self
confidence, independence, and cross-cultural communication abilities, the program
equips students with the skills to thrive in a globalized world and succeed academically
and professionally.

Program Overview

The ESL program at Oikos University offers three proficiency levels—Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced—designed to meet students where they are and guide them toward fluency and confidence in English. At the Beginning level, students build essential foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. They learn basic pronunciation, develop academic vocabulary, and begin forming clear, simple sentences for effective communication. In the Beginning High (Low-Intermediate) level, courses strengthen and expand these foundational skills, helping students communicate with greater fluency and accuracy. Instruction focuses on identifying main ideas and key details, organizing structured paragraphs, and applying grammar in real-world contexts. The Intermediate level prepares students for more advanced academic challenges and real-life communication by emphasizing critical thinking, academic writing, and synthesizing information from multiple sources. As students progress to the Advanced and High-Advanced levels, they refine their skills to meet the demands of academic and professional environments. They engage in scholarly reading, deliver structured presentations, conduct independent research, and produce clear, well-organized academic writing while mastering advanced grammar and complex language structures.

The program supports well-rounded language development by focusing on Listening & Speaking, Reading & Vocabulary, and Writing & Grammar. Students can choose from specialized tracks such as Academic English, Everyday Communication, and Grammar & Writing Mastery, each tailored to support specific goals. These targeted courses prepare learners for success in both academic and professional settings.
